Hidden London aims to take visitors on a journey into the subterranean world of London’s abandoned tube stations. This temporary exhibition promotes and supplements London Transport Museum's programme of guided tours into the actual stations. We made the exhibition as immersive as possible, combining displayed artefacts from the original stations alongside decommissioned London Transport equipment set into labyrinthine setworks. Layers of Trompe-l'œil graphic wallpapers, distressed set-painting along with a continuous soundscape, AV projection, and a load of dirt and gaffer tape were used to make as authentic an experience as possible. It was a great opportunity for us to deepen our approach to creating immersive exhibition design and produce something really atmospheric on a pretty tight budget. Featured stations include Down Street in Mayfair, home to the Railway Executive, controlling the railways nationwide during World War Two, and the Clapham South Deep Shelter, which was home to bombed-out Londoners during the war, and to Windrush arrivals afterwards.
