Writing: Making Your Mark

British Library  |  2019
The British Library appointed us to design their exhibition exploring 5,000 years of the development of writing. Collaborating with Seeing Things we developed a strong formal response for the show, linking all the sections of the exhibition together on a continuous folded ribbon – metaphorically reminiscent of a surface that all writing has taken place on.

We decided not to use the wall display cases and instead weave the ribbon through the gallery space, focusing the drama into the gallery, and opening the display up, affording views across the gallery and creating dynamic forms within the darkness of the gallery.

Featuring over 100 objects that showcase 40 different writing systems, the ribbon folds itself over display cases, supports others, and rises up the wall to embrace one of the wall cases into its form.

In developing the exhibition, we collaborated with:
Seeing Things: Graphic Design and co-Creative Direction
Setworks: Build & Install
Clay Interactive: AV Software
DHA: Lighting
